Postgraduate New Zealand Meat Industry Scholarship

What a fantastic way to start the year! Joni White was awarded a Postgraduate New Zealand Meat Industry Scholarship by the NZ Meat Industry Association for her BSc (Hons). Each year, two postgraduate scholarships are awarded. The scholarship carries an award of $10,000 pa for students undertaking a research project that has applications in the meat industry.

Joni’s Honours project will look at using optical techniques to detect the viability of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. She will use flow cytometry and the optrode to detect the viability of S. aureus following treatment with various antibiotics. Her work will extend on her research for her Science Scholars project, which used flow cytometry to enumerate live and dead bacteria.
